HMG’s got a new team member, and we’re excited to introduce you to him! Meet Blaine Bowers, our new Senior Visual Designer. Don’t worry – with a superhero name like Blaine Bowers, we already told him we expect nothing less than superhero powers. So far, he hasn’t disappointed. Get ready for a new bang at HMG.

Here’s a little from Blaine himself:

My name is Blaine Bowers and I am a Visual Designer. I was born in Oklahoma, lived in Colorado from ages 3 to 9 then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas where I remained until my move to Austin nearly 6 years ago. I moved to Austin with my son, Aton, and my best friend and girlfriend at the time. I went to OSU in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and got my degree in Multimedia Technology where I graduated in 2003. From there I’ve held some sort of design job for the last 15+ years, working mostly at design agencies. I enjoy working through the design process to build efficient and effective products. I also love typography, photography/videography, learning to code, and 3D technologies like 3D printing and laser engraving!

What are you most passionate about?

I am very passionate about nature/physics. I really enjoy learning how the world around me works and how it’s perceived by me and other life. I take photos of bugs and plants, I read articles about physics and space, I love hiking, camping and am very interested in bushcraft. I may want to live off of the land someday!

What do you like most about Austin? What’s your favorite thing to do here?

Nature and people. There are so many spots to hike and enjoy nature in Austin. I’m from North Texas where everything is plains with mesquite trees. It’s been nice to have these spaces available. The people here are so nice and so weird! There’s always something to do.

Favorite Austin taco spot?

Hands down, Taco Joint! They make the best tortillas and have some pretty creative tacos. It’s cheap, delicious, and the tacos are large (2 is usually enough).

What do you think is the most exciting new technology?

Artificial intelligence. It’s both scary and exciting and I think it’s going to change the world (hopefully for the better). Deep fake videos are becoming more and more real. AI has combed through scientific papers and made new discoveries that we didn’t see, it’s started to find cancer in MRI scans, it chats with us on websites, etc.

Why did you choose to work at HMG?

I chose to work at HMG because I was impressed with the work and so that I could focus more on branding, design, and building my discovery/design processes. I’m really excited to be a part of the team and to see where we go from here!

What’s the most exciting aspect of your job position, career field, or industry?

I really like learning about new businesses and finding ways I can help them through design thinking. It’s nice to work at an agency that has a variety of clients and projects. It’s refreshing to bounce back and forth on project types.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

The ability to manipulate time/space. I want to teleport, stop/scrub time, influence gravity, and travel throughout the universe without worrying about breathing and eating. Show me the inside of a black hole!

What’s your favorite movie?

The Goonies! I grew up watching this movie. I’ve definitely seen it more than any other movie. I also watched Tombstone way too much in college for some reason.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Whatever it is, do it right the first time.

Have you learned any valuable lessons from your mistakes or failures?

Networking is important. Both on a professional and personal level. Also, take care of your body. Eat right and exercise.

Final Question – what’s your philosophy in life?

We all die someday. Stay curious and accept change for the better.
