Hey, there! My name is Thalia Carrillo and I’m the freshest member of the HMG Creative team. I’m thrilled to be the new Social Media and Marketing Intern! I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin less than a month ago, with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Sociology. My studies brought me to Austin four years ago, but I’m formerly and proudly an El Pasoan. When I’m not in either of those locations, you can find me traveling to places like New York, Mexico City, or Paris. I’ve even attended The University of London, where I studied Social Work.

During my time on the Forty Acres, I was a member of Texas Pearls, a volunteer organization, where I eventually became the Director of Recruitment and later, Director of Public Relations.  I gained experience in hosting meetings, organizing events, and working creatively through social media and even doing some design work. Additionally, I got to work with some local philanthropic organizations like The Center for Child Protection, The Settlement Home for Children, and The Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas. This took up the majority of the time when I wasn’t in class or studying. However, I squeezed in some time for writing and photography for student-run magazines like ORANGE Magazine, and I played in intramural volleyball leagues a few times throughout the years.

I am so grateful for the well-rounded higher level education that I received at UT. It made it both easier and harder to find my career path. I was once a Government major, then I was a Political Communications major, and I eventually settled with Journalism. Journalism taught me so many valuable skills like writing and reporting, photography, videography, graphic design, and a bit of coding. I’m not sure that I want to be a traditional reporter, though. As I was coming to this realization my senior year, I was constantly job-hunting for anything and everything semi-related to journalism. About 90 percent of the time, “marketing” was in the title of all job positions, so that’s what led me to this place! I know that HMG will give me a new skill set and help pave the way for my career path.

Nowadays, when I’m not in the office, you can find me thrifting for vintage fashion, planning my next travel destination, attending a concert (most likely The 1975 or John Mayer), or trying the espresso at a local coffee shop. I love specialty coffee so much, that I work as a barista on the weekends. So join me for a latte and we can talk Brand Strategy!
